Peckham: Graves registration activities of the Quartermaster Corps in the European Theater began in December , when the United States asked the British War Office about burial facilities for our military.   Building American Military Cemeteries in Europe Nathalie Le Barbier, a French woman who works at the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery, helps interpret the battlefield for visitors. General John Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI, was given the responsibility to build these cemeteries and monuments.

      The Oise-Aisne American Cemetery is a military cemetery in northern France where American soldiers killed in the area during World War I are buried. It includes a memorial to the Americans missing in action who fought in the same area. Plots A through D are devoted to the 6, soldiers buried there. The American Battle Monuments Commission maintains 24 permanent American burial grounds on foreign soil. Presently there are , U.S. war dead interred at these cemeteries.
